Rhode Island Reds are known for their excellent egg-laying abilities. Hens typically begin laying at around 4-5 months of age and can produce up to 280 light brown eggs each year. While they do occasionally go broody, it is not overly common. When they do brood, they tend to be attentive and capable mothers. They will often accept and sit on eggs from other birds as well, making them a helpful addition to a mixed flock.
